There are many friends on the forum talking about DUSE using USB devices. I want to tell everyone that I have been using USB hard drives normally in DOS for a long time. Now I will make some supplements on the use of DUSE, hoping to be a little helpful to everyone:

0. Just add "device=duse.exe" in CONFIG.SYS. No parameters are needed. I tried many parameters before, and I found that DUSE 4.4 actually handles it better by itself!!!!!

1. Don't use the DUSELDR command to drive devices at the command line. I have tried many times. The device can be recognized, but the content in the disk is empty. The possible reason I think is the problem of DUSELDR; in addition, when using version 4.2 of DUSE, sometimes there is a memory allocation error. I personally think it is the problem of power management APM. In version 4.4, it has been solved relatively well.

2. If there are more than two USB interfaces on the computer, there seems to be a problem. My motherboard is MSI 845 Ultra with 8 USB ports, 2 each for 1.1 and 2.0. Only by choosing to use only two USB interfaces in the BIOS can my USB hard drive be recognized smoothly; in addition, DUSE only supports the 1.1 specification. I haven't succeeded with 2.0. Whether it is a 2.0 USB interface connecting a 1.1 hard drive or a 2.0 hard drive connecting to a 2.0 USB interface, I haven't succeeded : (;

3. In addition, there are some USB device drivers under DOS, such as Motto Hairu, but they cannot drive my USB hard drive;

4. Pay attention to the voltage. Some USB hard drives need an external power supply to work

Does your motherboard also have separate 1.1/2.0 USB? Is the motherboard simply integrated with a chip that supports 2.0?

Yes, the MSI (Micro-Star International) 845D-ARU motherboard uses the 845D chipset which only supports version 1.1, and there is a NEC chipset version 2.0 on the board.

May I ask, after using DUSE under DOS, is the USB hard drive read-only, or both readable and writable? I don't have a USB device, so I can't test it.

Of course it's readable and writable, that's just like using a general hard disk!!!

It works the same as a general hard disk during use. It can use FAT32. When partitioning in WINXP, it can use NTFS partitioning, and it can use long filenames under DOSLFN. In short, it is no different from a hard disk : )

Great! That means DOS fully supports (at least partially) USB hard drives. Although I introduced and recommended the DUSE software, it was further developed and enhanced by Zen. Hehe!

My Discovery:
I have a USB flash drive and a hard disk. When I use DUSE alone, the system reports "Failed to load usb storage device", and I have tried many parameters when using DUSE alone, but it cannot recognize any device. And when I use Motto Hairu alone, I cannot find the device, but when I use these two programs at the same time, everything is OK, and it can support USB flash drives and hard disks, and can boot 100%. But each time it can only support one device. Just write the following things in config.sys, but you need to download these programs first. The download address is upstairs:
device=DUSE.EXE VERBOSE=0 XFER=64 NOCD
device=USBASPI.SYS
device=Di1000dd.SYS
When running to DUSE, the USB hard disk light will stay on, and it will still say "Failed to load usb storage device". Then when running to Motto Hairu, it will recognize the hard disk or Motto Hairu.
It seems that DUSE supports plug and play, but my method here has no effect on plug and play. So I still hope to start the device with DUSE alone.

It's just that I often communicate with them on English websites, so I brought DUSE to China.

Two more points:

1: The address of DUSE must not conflict with that of EMM386/UMBPCI; otherwise, the system is likely to freeze when loading DUSE. For example, DEVICE=EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D100 to avoid conflict with DUSE's OHCI.
2: To exit DUSE after loading, you can consider using the combination of ADDEV/DELDEV.
