DR DOS 6.0 mainly has the following features:
1. By using Disk Compression technology, it can convert a specified disk (hard disk) into a compressed disk, nearly doubling the usable disk space, such as turning 40M into 80M. This allows hardware resources to be fully utilized.
2. Through the serial port, it can achieve “dual-machine communication” between two microcomputers, meaning information can be conveniently exchanged between them, such as remote control operations, viewing directories, and copying files to each other.
3. It provides task-switching functionality. By creating a switching area or switching file for each task on the disk or in extended (expanded) memory, foreground and background programs can be quickly switched with hotkeys, and information exchange between tasks can also be realized.
4. It can make more reasonable and effective use of memory. For extended memory (EXTEND) and expanded memory (EXPAND), it supports existing memory management standards. For 286 and above models, it emphasizes the use of memory above 640K, leaving as much conventional memory as possible for the user’s applications.
5. It provides a system command SHELL program _VIEWMAX, which has a good user interface and supports MOUSE-based multi-window pull-down menus, making file operations and disk management very intuitive and convenient.
6. It provides users, in the form of system commands, with a number of practical functions such as disk images, CACHE, optimization, and file recovery, and can do some things that in the past only utility software such as PCTOOLS could do.
In addition, DR DOS 6.0 also supports code pages for many countries, and can perform word processing in nearly 20 languages including English, German, French, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. Its rich set of commands (84 commands and 10 drivers), convenient help information (for every command, help can be displayed by adding /? or /H), and automated installation process bring users a great deal of convenience.
