My computer has bad sectors. When it acts up, it can't enter the system. Following what people said online, I used HDDREG, MHDD, and FBDISK in sequence to repair it, but it took an extremely long time. In two days it only repaired 2%, so I gave up. I installed XP on a partition that could still be opened, and now it can be used, but it seems to fail periodically and won't enter the system. Could any expert give me some advice? Many thanks!

Is a low-level format absolutely necessary?

For a hard drive with bad sectors, a thorough check must be carried out, and the bad sectors must be dealt with. If necessary, a low-level format has to be done. Then use disk repair software to check it again and mask the bad sectors. If it still keeps failing after doing this, I suggest you replace the hard drive.

If the bad sectors are relatively concentrated, you can use DISKGEN to make that area into a separate partition, then hide it and leave it unused. Any hard drive repair software is helpless against physical damage.
Last year I used HDDREG to repair a 20G Diamond hard drive, and it took more than 10 hours. At night I copied HDDREG to a virtual drive and ran it, then turned off the monitor and went to sleep. I repaired it continuously for two nights.

Then is low-level formatting also harmful to the hard drive?
