My laptop's sound card uses an ESS chip. Can it be driven under DOS? If so, how can it be done?
What exactly should the format/commands be?

Thanks

I have the DOS driver for the ES1868 sound card, uploading it now. I don't know whether it will be useful for you.

If you need anything, please contact me.

All the device drivers are on the laptop CD. Find the sound card one and see whether there's a FOR DOS one inside.

Thanks, everyone
Kinglion, I downloaded your driver and also used its SETUP to install it, wrote the files into CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, and also set the environment variables, but it still can't make any sound. When entering DOS it says it can't find the
sound card. Really frustrated..........
Could you please show me the way!!!!!!

First go to Driver Home and find an HWINFO, figure out the sound card's chip model, and only then will it be possible to find the corresponding driver.

There are many models in the ESS sound card series. I don't know which model yours is. You need to first determine the sound card model and then install the corresponding driver. You can do as the poster above said: first download a program to check the exact sound card model, and then....

Many newer chips no longer provide drivers for DOS.

I checked, and this chip may be a 1938 or 1946. Whether a DOS driver can be found is still hard to say.
