I was in DOS
c:\>format c:/q/s
It said my command was wrong. So where exactly is the mistake? Do I have to boot from a boot disk and get to A:\> first?

I've formatted C while at the C:\ prompt before. It's not impossible, and I didn't use a boot disk either...

It is possible. After booting with a boot disk, you can probably format drive C from any drive letter. I once formatted C with a:format when I didn't have a floppy drive, but I don't know what that guy wants to do. I find it pretty interesting.

Please note: before carrying this out, make sure FORMAT.COM is in the command search path.
For example: PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;
Then FORMAT.COM must exist in one of the above three directories.

Why can't you format C while at the C: prompt!!!!!! I've done it like this before. And it worked very successfully.
But it was c:\>format c:/s/q
You reversed s and q, haha!!1

Right, well said.
