I saw a sentence while studying the DOS command FORMAT on a consulting webpage: “If after formatting the total space and available space are equally large, it means the disk is normal; if the available space is smaller than the total space, it means the disk is damaged.”
My hard drive is 60G, and after formatting the available space is only a little over 55G. Could it be that my hard drive is damaged?

Total space refers to the total space shown for the hard drive.
The sentence “If after formatting the total space and available space are equally large, it means the disk is normal; if the available space is smaller than the total space, it means the disk is damaged” is a bit wrong. If you formatted with the /u parameter, then...

Generally, if there is some difference but not much, it is caused by different calculation methods. My IBM 60G hard drive is nominally 61.4GB, and in reality it should be about 58.55G. If yours is nominally 60G, then it should be about 57.22G or so, because of the factor 1000000/(1024×1024).
But if yours adds up to only a little over 55G, that may be because of partitioning, because partitioning will cause some waste. It does not mean the hard drive is damaged.

Everyone, please listen to my analysis: first, the hard drive units are different. The reason is that we all know 1024MB=1GB. But the units used by hard drive manufacturers are instead 1000MB=1GB~ I think this problem is easy to solve~ the hard drive recognized by the computer uses 1024, while the manufacturers use it like this~
