After I installed the CD-ROM driver under DOS, when I restarted into Win98, as soon as the taskbar appeared it would freeze there, and the desktop icons would not come out either. When I opened the config.sys and autoexec.bat files to look, there was nothing in them except the CD-ROM driver. After deleting the contents of these two files and restarting, everything returned to normal. I don't know what is causing this.

Which CD-ROM driver did you install?

It's the driver that came with the CD-ROM drive. The config.sys and autoexec.bat files were written automatically by the driver program, so there shouldn't be any mistake. Yesterday I waited patiently and it finally finished booting after five minutes, but when config.sys and autoexec.bat are empty, startup never takes more than 20 seconds. After DOS finishes booting and Windows starts, what other program still has to run? What is causing my current situation?

Try a generic CD-ROM driver instead. Maybe the driver that came with the CD-ROM drive has a compatibility problem.
