To install DOS 7.1, I spent nearly two weeks on it and reinstalled the system four or five times. Today I finally got it installed. So that other people won’t have to take the long way around, I’m posting my experience here for everyone’s reference.
After downloading the installation floppies, download a 7.1 boot disk and an image tool as well (http://www.winimage.com/download.htm). Prepare three floppy disks with no bad sectors. After installing the image tool, write the downloaded files onto the floppies. The specific steps are: double-click the extracted file, click OK, and you will enter the image tool interface. There is a floppy disk icon at the top; click it, and you can write what you need onto the floppy. It’s best to format the floppy first. Next you need to reinstall the operating system. Boot the computer with the boot disk, format the partition where you want to install the operating system, insert the first disk, and enter setup to begin installation. Then follow the menu. Near the end, there will be a prompt like this: Invalid command.com Inter correct name of Command eg:c:\command). Insert the boot disk and enter the command: a:\command, then you can continue. After installation is finished, install the other operating systems. Note: you must reinstall the operating system, and install DOS first |

Error 1: that first disk is bootable to begin with (unless it was made incorrectly), so there is no need at all to boot from another boot disk, swap it out, and then enter SETUP, so as to avoid prompts like "Invalid command.." and the like;
Error 2: “you must reinstall the operating system” is incorrect. The key is what operating system was originally there. Even with some other operating systems, when installing DOS, just choose the "Overwrite boot sector" option (not the default option!) and DOS can be installed successfully!! |

Thanks to the site admin for correcting me, but I wrote it based on my own actual experience. I think next time I’ll be more careful.
