My machine has been having problems lately, and I was planning to use Ghost to restore the system, but after opening it in Windows and selecting the file, it wouldn't run. After reading the instructions I found out that Ghost can't run under Windows. So should it be run under DOS? What exactly should I do under DOS? After I use a boot disk to get into DOS and enter D:/GHOST, what should I do next? Please have an expert help me solve this. Please write it in a bit more detail, include every step. Thanks.

Enter the directory where Ghost is located and run Ghost.exe directly. After the main window appears, click "Local". At this time, the three options on the pop-up menu mean:
"Disk" — back up the entire hard disk;
"Partition" — back up a certain partition of the hard disk;
"Check" — check whether there are factors that may cause the backup or restore to fail.
We choose "To Image" under "Partition" and prepare to make a backup. In the hard disk selection window that pops up, click the target hard disk, then choose the hard disk partition to be backed up (actually the C drive). After selecting the target partition, press the "OK" button, and in the "File Name Image Copy To" window that appears afterward, choose the path for storing the backup file, and fill in the backup file name in the "File name" box (with .GHO as the extension). Before the backup starts, the program will also ask whether to compress the backup file, and provide three options:
"No" means no compression at all;
"Fast" means a small compression ratio, but the backup runs relatively quickly;
"High" means a higher compression ratio, but the backup speed is relatively slower.
Finally, press the "Yes" button in the "Question" dialog box, and Ghost will immediately start the backup work.
Next time when you need to reinstall the system, how do you restore the backup file? Very simple: run Ghost and choose "Partition→From Image" under the "Local" menu. In the "File Name To Load Image From" window, select the backup file to restore, then choose the target hard disk and partition, and select "Yes" in the "Question" dialog box to begin "reinstalling" the system. Different from before, this time you won't have to frantically look for any installation CD. You only need to wait a few short minutes, and a freshly made, immediately usable Windows system will settle into your hard disk right away. In addition, Ghost also supports data backup under system environments such as WinNT, Unix, Linux, and Novell, and also supports data backup under various partition conditions such as FAT16, FAT32, OS/2, NTFS, and HPFS. During the cloning process it can also automatically partition and format the target hard disk. But everyone needs to note that when using Ghost to restore a backup file, it must be done in a pure DOS environment!

"Enter the directory where Ghost is located and run Ghost.exe directly" — what I want to ask is, what command do I use to run it directly? How do I type it? Seems like a really newbie question.

cn_archer already explained it in enough detail, so just find someone to help you do it! That's a bit safer!

At the DOS prompt, type ghost.exe and press Enter, and it will run. Then just follow step by step what the expert in reply #2 said.

Remember, for Ghost, backing up a file is just 122
For reinstalling, 123 is enough

My situation is this: after selecting the corresponding partition and clicking OK, I can't get into FILE NAME IMAGE COPY TO. to choose the path for the backup file. Repeatedly clicking OK doesn't work. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

I understand now. After you press the OK button, you must then press the "TAB" key and then press Enter, and only then can you enter the path selection screen and continue to the next step.

My feeling is that if the experts could also write out the specific "key presses" for each step when answering, that would be even better
