Right now after booting into DOS, I always just shut down directly or reboot. So how exactly is DOS supposed to be closed?

DOS doesn't need to be closed. When you're done, you can shut down directly or reboot.

What you booted into is pure DOS, not a DOS window. The poster in reply #2 is right. If you don't want to shut down, use qemm for a quick reboot.
