I installed DOS 7.1 in VPC, but when I play DOS games it shows that conventional memory is only 492K, while this game needs at least 580K conventional memory to run, and if I use the sound card it needs 610K. How can I increase conventional memory? There should be a lot of things that can be moved into upper memory, right? What should I do?

Could it be because when installing DOS you chose not to load EMM386, so no UMB memory was provided?

Refer to the following config.sys; generally it can meet your requirements
device=himem.sys /testmemff
device=emm386.exe noems
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd000
dos=high,umb
fileshigh=40
buffershigh=40

If your game needs expanded memory, then replace “device=emm386.exe noems” with “device=emm386.exe ram” for this line

Change:
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd000
to:
device=vide-cdd.sys /D:mscd000
to greatly save memory usage and speed up installation.
