This is the moderator's mem info. Why does my SYSTEM always take up 2-3K more ;( I'm just short of these 2,3K to reach 630K conventional memory, it's become an obsession ^-^) ; What determines it? And there's also a " dblbuff ". It's not in your mem; it's not in my config.sys either; why does it always get loaded? Is it because my config has a choice to boot Win98 and DOS, so it gets loaded? Can any expert explain it? Thanks!

Add a line in MSDOS.SYS:
DoubleBuffer=0

There must not be a DOS=NOAUTO line in CONFIG.SYS, otherwise SYSTEM (that is, IO.SYS) will take up 1-2KB more memory.

Mine isn't equal to 0, hehe, mine is DOS=HIGH,UMB ,AUTO ; it's because my DoubleBuffer in msdos . SYS is set to 1. No wonder it always takes 3K from me. But if DOS decides whether to use buffering or not, and if it does use it, then when I run some programs, like compressing or extracting, wouldn't it speed up processing?

That's not ordinary buffering, but double buffering. It won't necessarily speed things up like SMARTDRV does; it depends on the actual situation.

Oh, so this double buffering is rather special, right? ; oh dear, this, this, this "actual situation" means... I can't tell what kind of programs need double buffering to speed up running. Could the moderator give a tiny little example? Like........thanks
My dos in config isn't equal to 0, so why does SYSTEM always take 11K from me instead of getting down to your 9K? What other factors determine it?
