When I can't run some software in DOS, it gives this message:
program too big to fit in memory Judging from the words, does it mean it takes up too much memory, and there isn't enough memory, so it can't run; is that what it means? Thanks! |

It's because there is too little conventional memory.... 640K is conventional memory...

Oh, no wonder it works fine if I reboot and run that software first. Not knowing English is really frustrating. Looks like while learning DOS I also have to learn ABCD; thanks.

How can this problem be solved? I've already loaded EMM386 and HIMEM, but it still shows “PROGRAM TOO BIG TO FIT IN MEMORY”, and I've already scanned for viruses too.

This has nothing to do with viruses. I'm trying to use qemm386 instead to see whether it can solve it.

But then why is it that after rebooting, running that software first works fine?

There are too many things added in CONFIG or AUTOEXEC...
For the CD-ROM drive you can use the ATAPICDD.SYS and ATAPIDVD.SYS drivers Use SHSUCDX instead of MSCDEX Use UMBPCI instead of EMM386 ... If you want to use EMS, then use HIMEM+UMBPCI+EMM386 |

Mm, thanks. I've been looking for things that can replace those Win ones, like emm386, but unfortunately I didn't succeed. I used 4dos.COM to replace command.com, but although the CD-ROM drive could be found and had a drive letter, I couldn't switch to it; switching back to Win's COMMAND made it work normally right away; another failure. I'll do as you said and use umbpci and shsucdx as replacements.
One more question This prompt has appeared again, and now even device won't run: cpu error:ncorrect opcode 。killing process Is my CPU asking to retire? |
