I downloaded many out-of-print Chinese and Western DOS software from Huilong Software and Qibu Network yesterday. Only I know how I feel. The classic software on Qibu Network, in fact, I had it ten years ago. Later, due to an accident, the data was lost. And Qibu Network can't be accessed anymore, and that was for many years. I searched hard but couldn't replenish so many. Today I finally replenished them. This time I learned my lesson, backing up with USB drives, CDs, and dual hard drives to prevent accidents, heh heh

Because my work is relatively special, I come into contact with thousands of computers. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I collect e-waste
I found that there are several things that have a great impact on UMB capacity in terms of hardware, such as motherboards, graphics cards, network cards, etc.

Hardware:

The motherboard I use is SOYO K7VTA PRO
When you flash the BIOS of this motherboard to a version above 2AA7, you will lose part of the UMB
The reason is that the BIOS of versions above this will support USB boot, and this function will occupy 32KB or 48K of UMB, whether you use a USB drive or not
Solution: Flash the BIOS to 2AA7, which doesn't support USB boot, but you will get UMB. But this version only supports up to ATHLON XP 2100+ CPU and doesn't support hard drives larger than 137G. There's no way around it, just for UMB..

If you use "high-end network cards" like 3COM, you will lose about 5KB of UMB, probably due to the BOOT ROM on the network card
Solution: Replace with some "low-end network cards" like 8139

Some chip-based graphics cards may lose 16KB of UMB, such as a certain brand's S3 Savage 2000 graphics card. There should be other chips, but it hasn't been tested
Solution: Replace with graphics cards of other brand chips. I use G400MAX, and this graphics card doesn't lose UMB

The above are my personal practical operation experiences for many years, which are real and reliable! I特此 share them! Hope to give some friends inspiration

If your conditions are limited and you can't replace hardware, then you can only start from software and try to get more UMB

Under normal circumstances, you will get 219KB of UMB. Adding the NOHIGH parameter will get 224KB of UMB

If Windows 3.2 crashes after such optimization, it's the graphics card problem I mentioned earlier. It's recommended to replace the graphics card to solve it. This method is the best! Or remove part of the parameters of EMM386, but it will reduce your UMB.. heh heh
