I use DOSBOX 0.73, sometimes use VMWARE, but neither is entirely satisfactory.

My P4 3.0 runs XP, the fan is extremely noisy as soon as the VMWARE virtual machine is started. Running DOSBOX is better. Generally, DOS programs are just about okay and not too noisy (but still louder than the sound under XP). However, as soon as you enter WIN3.1, the noise becomes very loud.

Does anyone have a good solution, fellow enthusiasts?

Thanks for the info from the person above!
But pure DOS isn't the solution; even pure DOS makes the fan spin like crazy.
I really miss the 386, where the CPU had no fan and no heat sink.

Both DOSBox and VMware are virtual machines. The thread starter can use VPC and execute idle.com in the virtual DOS to reduce the CPU usage of the virtual machine.

In addition, high-frequency P4 PD PEE are all garbage CPUs, which are hot, noisy and power-consuming. Changing to a newer CPU won't be that noisy.

Yeah, the friend upstairs is right. Now the mainstream CPUs seem to have returned to below 2.0 again.

Core 2 and K8 are back to around 2.0 GHz. Now Phenom II and i5/i7 are above 3 GHz again, but none of them generate as much heat as P4 PD.

Alas, I'm really unlucky. I originally thought the 3.0 P4 dual-core would be very enjoyable, but unexpectedly it's extremely noisy.

But among the above several emulators, relatively speaking, the 0.73 DOSBOX portable has the smallest fan noise when running DOS software, but it's not completely silent. However, it's basically satisfactory already.
