I prefer DOS, maybe because of being nostalgic, so I like dedicated machines for specific uses.

Nowadays, CMD is commonly used. In the past, bootable floppy disks were made, but now it's rare. Only when testing or experimenting would DOS be used. In Windows, QEMU is the most commonly used virtual machine specifically for booting DOS. There's also DOSBox. Then there's GRUB in Windows XP virtualizing DOS. Sometimes PXE is used to boot DOS. I'm ashamed that I don't have DOS independently installed on my machine. It seems that the DOS emulated by PXE, GRUB, or the bootable DOS from the Windows 98 installation CD has no difference in usage from the real machine DOS (installed on the hard drive).

I still have a vintage machine with a 486 inside, and it has the pure DOS 6.0 version installed.

My machine is installed with four systems: msdos7.1, 98, win2k, xp, and redhat linux 9.0.
I have an AST486/33 from about 1994, with 8M memory, a 500M hard disk, an SB sound card, a NE2000 compatible network card. Installed with dos6.21, one 5" floppy disk, one 3" floppy disk, and several boxes of floppy disks. The above equipment can all be used normally, for nostalgia and collection. |

Haven't installed DOS yet, just playing around in CMD. The home computer is too slow.

I need to use CMD mainly, and also have DOS (in a separate partition), which is MSDOS 7.1. But it's not used often. It's mainly for pure learning about DOS and computer working principles, and for checking and maintaining Windows systems. Or sometimes just to experience the speed of the machine (my machine is quite old, and there's no speed at all when running so many software under Windows XP). Or just to make the people watching me not understand what I'm doing.
I've always heard that there are many fun games under DOS, but I haven't seen any except for CCH I saw 6 to 12 years ago, but I'm looking forward to it. This is also one of the reasons for using DOS. |
