What is the result of dir *d*? Why do some results like io.sys also appear?

The COMMAND built into DOS isn't that smart. `*d*` doesn't represent file names with the letter 'd' in the middle. `dir *d*` is the same as `dir *`, which is just `dir`.

The CMD.exe of XP is not smart enough either. I entered "dir *d*.*" under c:\>, and files like VIRUS.DAT were also displayed.

In Vista's CMD, only show files with D!!!
In Vista's Explorer, that's much more fun, automatically search for all deleted files on the entire hard drive!!!
(Including files in the emptied recycle bin can be found, really fun)

I actually found files deleted in 2005, fun, right?

Tools like DOS 6.22's undelete command, Norton's UNERASE, and active@'s UNERASER for quickly restoring permanently deleted files generally work when the clusters where the files are located on the disk haven't been occupied by other files. If these clusters have already been occupied by other files, restoration will be quite difficult.

If you replace the front with several? It won't be a problem :)
For example, to find MSDOS.SYS, you can use DIR ??DO?.SYS/A (in early versions of DOS,?? will include?, but CMD won't).
