My computer originally dual-booted Win 98 and Windows XP. Later I felt Win 98 was not stable enough, so I upgraded it to Wi
n 2000, but as a result Windows XP could no longer boot. What should I do?
Upgrading Win 98 to Win 2000 causes Win 2000 to overwrite the three important
boot files ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini. Win 2000 cannot boot Windows XP,
causing Windows XP to fail to start.
The key to solving this problem is to use Windows XP to boot Win 2000 (note: Win 2000 cannot boot Windows XP,
but Windows XP can boot Win 2000), that is, use Windows XP's ntldr and ntdetect.com files to boot the sys
tem, letting Windows XP boot Win 2000.
The method to solve the problem: first boot Win 98, then extract ntldr and
ntdetect.com from the I386 directory of the Windows XP installation CD, copy these two files to the root directory of the system boot partition, and set them to read-only and hidden
attributes. This way you can boot your Windows XP! If you mainly use Windows XP for work and
want to change the default boot option back to Windows XP, you only need to use Notepad to edit the boot.ini file and copy the XP
boot entry of that file after “default=”, as follows:
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(20)\WINDOWS
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(20)\WINDOWS=“Microsoft Windows XP Profession
al”/fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINNT=“Windows NT Server
Version 4.00 ”/basevideo /so
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(6)\WINNT=“Microsoft Windows 2000 Server”/fa
stdetect /noguiboo
C:\ = “Microsoft Windows”
Finally, set it to read-only and hidden attributes and save it to the root directory of the system boot partition.
Another method is: from another machine that can boot normally and has the same version of Windows XP installed,
copy these 3 files over, then edit the boot.ini file as needed according to the above method
(with Windows XP as the default option), and that will do!
In general, if before upgrading you back up those 3 boot files, then install Win 2
000 from a Win 98 boot disk, and after installation restore those 3 backup files to the root directory of the system boot partition, you can avoid the above trouble
from happening!
