The system currently has 256MB of memory, but MSDOS 6.22 only detects 64MB. Why??
What software can make use of all of it?? |

MS-DOS 6.22 is too old. It doesn't support large hard disks, large memory, FAT32, etc. Please upgrade the system to MS-DOS 7.10, then it will all be supported. My memory is also 256MB, and everything works normally under MS-DOS 7.10.

Actually, whether it supports more than 64MB isn't very meaningful. DOS can only access 1MB, and programs can only run within 640K, unless you enter protected mode, though I don't know whether that still counts as a DOS environment.

The following is a quote from nre at 2003-6-15 23:45:34: Of course it's still a DOS environment. The technical term is "DOS in protected mode". |

Does anyone know where I can download MS-DOS 7.10? Please send it to my email: yanguang607@163.net or QQ: 82892378. Many thanks! Also: isn't MS-DOS 6.22 the ultimate version? Where did this MS-DOS 7.10 come from? Please clear this up for me.

MSDOS7.1 is the DOS that comes with WIN98; 7.1 is the version number of that DOS. The latest is the DOS8.0 that comes with WINME.
You don't need to look everywhere for MSDOS7.1, just download a boot disk here, or make one yourself in WIN98. |

wengier's boot disk isn't MSDOS71 in the pure sense... It has been heavily optimized. And it uses many commands from other DOSes.

What do you mean by "wengier's boot disk isn't MSDOS71 in the pure sense"?! This is the latest MS-DOS 7.10! With the 98LOGO and so on removed, it's even more "pure"..

The following is a quote from 如是大师 at 2003-6-28 18:15:31: Heh, you mean the external commands, right~~ Then if you copy in those DOS commands from 98, wouldn't it become a pure and optimized MS-DOS 7.1?? |

Looks like what everyone means is: text-interface DOS is pure DOS

Use w's boot disk! Boot up-----format/q/s c: and there you go, the cleanest DOS 7.1! But everything on your C drive will be gone!
Use with caution! |

The following is a quote from waterz at 2003-6-28 21:33:35: Not necessarily. Sometimes graphical-interface DOS is also pure DOS.. The two key points are its compatibility and its style. If its compatibility is very good, and it has a standard DOS style, then it is pure DOS. Anyway, pure MS-DOS 7.10 has better compatibility than pure MS-DOS 6.22 (including both backward and forward compatibility; I've been using MS-DOS 7.10 continuously for more than two years, so I do have some real experience with it..), so calling it pure DOS is definitely not wrong. |
