I want to learn how to use DOS to reinstall Win98. Please help and teach this newbie. I have a Win98 installation CD. At first I still knew to change the setting in the BIOS to withCDROM, but after entering DOS I don't know what to do. It seems the first step is dir a:, and after that I have no idea. I really want to learn, so I'd like a few experts to teach me. Please make your replies as detailed as possible, and write out the DOS operating steps, because I'm a newbie Please help me. Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

It seems I also have to type SYSTEM C, but I don't know where to type it. Also where do I type format C, and how do I know when I've switched to the CD-ROM drive letter? Please give me some guidance. I'm slow, so when you reply please write the DOS commands clearly and don't leave anything out. Thanks!!!

system? Never heard of it
format is the command for formatting a disk, it has nothing to do with installation...

But you still have to format drive C before installing, right? What I'm asking about is the steps involved. What do I do first, what do I do second... system definitely exists. Before reinstalling drive C it asks you to give drive C a name. How about this, just explain it from the beginning, starting from powering on and pressing Delete to enter the BIOS. Please write it in more detail, and don't leave anything out. I'd be extremely grateful!!!!!

When powering on, set it in CMOS to boot from floppy
Then use a boot disk to enter DOS, and run
format/u/q(complete and quick) c:
LH SMARTDRV 2048 jload disk cache
%cdrom%(meaning your CD-ROM drive letter)
cd (the mulu where win98 is located)
setup

I don't quite understand these two lines, please explain. What does % mean, is there such a symbol on the keyboard? When my classmate helped me reinstall before, win98 seemed to be on drive a:. Is dir the command for that? You've really worked hard replying so late, sorry to trouble you

%cdrom% is just the variable for the CD-ROM drive
For now, don't worry about understanding it that clearly
You can just type your CD-ROM drive letter
cd (is the command for setting the current working path) the directory where win98 is located (I typed this wrong yesterday and misled you, sorry..)
dir is the command for viewing all files and folders in the current working path. If you're sure which directory a file is in, then you don't need it. If you don't know, you can use it to take a look...

Thanks, expert. If I have questions in the future I'll ask you again. If I have any computer problems (not related to DOS), can I ask you? Or could you give me a few forum addresses about computer troubleshooting (the kind a beginner like me can go to)? I feel kind of embarrassed always bothering you!!!

LH means running a program in upper memory
smartdrv is a command for loading cache
2048 is the size of the cache area being set

j was an extra letter typed by Ru Shi while typing pinyin (the first letter of jiazai, "load"! It doesn't mean anything.
