Some people say that now it's all the age of Win98 and Windows ME, so what's the point of still talking about DOS? But there are still some organizations (for example: banks and credit cooperatives) whose self-developed application programs run under Win32, and Win32 needs DOS 6.22, while the cost of secondary development is too high, and there is no need for it at present, so these programs are still in use. And the newly purchased machines in these organizations all have relatively high hardware specs; if they only run Win32, that would be too wasteful. Also, DOS 6.22 and Win32 cannot meet our needs for multimedia and Win9x application programs, so we need to make a dual system of Win98 and DOS 6.22.
1. We need to partition the newly purchased machines. Win32 runs on DOS 6.22, and DOS 6.22 can only be installed on a FAT16 partition. Win98 can also be installed on a FAT16 partition, but each FAT16 partition cannot be larger than 2G. Since the hard drives in newly purchased machines are all over 15G, if we make all partitions FAT16, we would need more than 7 partitions, and FAT16 partitions also cannot make effective use of disk space. So we should make C: FAT16, and the other partitions can be FAT32. Boot the machine with a WIN98 boot disk, enter FDISK at A:\>, and the first screen will prompt: whether to make the partitions FAT32 format. Press N to enter, first delete the partitions, then create one DOS primary partition, which is partition C:. Do not create an extended partition. Exit and restart the computer. Then enter FDISK again; this time choose Y at the prompt, create the extended partition and logical drives. After partitioning, restart and format the partitions. This way, C: is a FAT16 partition, and the other partitions are FAT32 partitions. 2. Boot with the Win98 boot disk and install Win98. Remove the read-only, hidden, and system attributes from the io.sys/msdos.sys/config.sys/command.com files in the root directory of C:, then change the extensions of these five files, io.sys/msdos.sys/config.sys/command.com/autoexec.bat, to .win (others are fine too; the main thing is that the positions of these files must not be changed) 3. Boot with the DOS 6.22 installation disk and install DOS 6.22, then you can install Win32, etc. Note that Win32 cannot be installed in the same directory as Win98. 4. Under the DOS directory, use the ATTRIB command to remove the read-only, hidden, and system attributes from the io.sys/msdos.sys/config.sys/command.com files in the root directory of C:. Use the REN command to change the extensions of these five files, io.sys/msdos.sys/config.sys/command.com/autoexec.bat, to .dos. Then change back the five files just changed to *.win. Remove attributes c:\dos>attrib -r -s -h c:\io.sys Change extension c:\dos>ren io.sys io.dos 5. Boot the computer with the Win98 boot disk, enter SYS C: at A:\> to transfer the Win98 system files to C:, and modify the msdos.sys file in the root directory of C:. The windows9X msdos.sys file is actually a text file and can be opened with text editors such as Notepad or EDIT. Under , add bootMune=1; this is the Windows boot automatic menu. That's it, now the Win98 + DOS 6.22 dual system is ready. At startup a selection menu will appear automatically. Choose the first item to enter Win98 normally, and choose the seventh item, that is the last item, to enter DOS 6.22. |

Install DOS first, then install WIN98, and that makes it dual-boot. Also, Wengier tried modifying IO.SYS, after which WIN32 could be installed on FAT32. Also, newer Chinese character support systems such as UCDOS and CCDOS97 all support FAT32.

The WIN32 system can run completely under WIN98's DOS. I also successfully tested it with Wengier's help. This can simplify many of the steps above, and partitions larger than 2G can also be created. Most importantly, the entire hard disk can be shared.
