Mac OS blazed the trail for the Windows operating system, MS-Windows has taken over 90% of the personal computer market, NOVER is the mainstream on servers, Linux is just rising, and DOS is old but not fading.
There are so many talented people here, so why not develop a new operating system? Like Linux.
What kind of operating system would be a good one?
I think it should have the following characteristics:
1. It should be closed, that is, not subject to alteration by outside programs, so viruses and other malicious programs cannot damage the system. All outside software should have its own separate directory like DOS programs do, but not modify any system files. It should support multiple users, and users should not be able to affect each other. Better yet, it should use solidified hardware;
2. It should be advanced. For example: ① use a special file system, no longer support FAT-16, FAT-32, or NTFS, making encryption easier and security better; ② use a globally unified character set, so whether English, Chinese, or Japanese, the system supports it directly without needing to install anything extra; ③ use an advanced memory management mechanism, completely abandoning the memory management problems left over from old DOS...
3. It should be easy to use; this is one of the secrets of MS-Windows's success.

Sounds good, this ought to be 64-bit DOS then..

If it "no longer supports FAT-16, FAT-32, and NTFS", then users will have to go around looking for "NTFS for DOS", and that would be inconvenient for everyone. Since people are usually not using just one operating system at the same time, data exchange is a problem. "Using a special file system" is a very good idea, but it should still "support FAT-16, FAT-32, and NTFS", that way it would be easier to promote and use.

Will we have to wait N more years before a system like this exists? I want to use a system that's compatible with everything, so there wouldn't be so much trouble running back and forth among different systems, and there'd be no need to keep looking for and developing utility software that has to convert things back and forth between systems just so resources can be used mutually. I wonder whether I'll live to see it.

Exactly! It needs someone to develop it, and it also needs everyone's support! And it may take a very long time; without patience, success is impossible.

It should have open source code and powerful networking functions like LINUX. It should be easy enough for idiots to use like WINDOWS. It should have a pleasing interface like MASOS. And like DOS, it should make people feel that they themselves have control over everything in the machine.

1, open source
2, supports almost all file systems in use now
3, allows both CMDLINE and GUI
4, its own functions are sufficient
5, has Win's ease of use
6, compatible with Win
7, the user is free
If it were like that, I'd throw out all the other systems... pretty much the same as what others said...
站不稳,真的站不稳,DOS真的很难站稳,谁给我找个立脚的地方?
