In early 1993, Microsoft released DOS version 6. On the basis of DOS 5, DOS 6 further expanded functions that users previously had to buy from other software companies. First, DOS 6 provided the INTERLNK and INTERSVR applications, which made it easy for portable computers to exchange files with desktop PCs. In the future, many newly released computers would be equipped with power management chips to control power usage, and those chips supported APM (Advanced Power Management). DOS 6 provided the POWER command, so DOS could control that chip. DOS 6 also provided a program to check for and remove viruses, as well as a utility to defragment disks. To help users configure their own systems, DOS 6 introduced an option for creating basic CONFIG.SYS configuration menus.
Before releasing DOS 6, Microsoft released Windows for Workgroups and a network-based version of Windows. That version allowed users to share data, send and receive email, and print files remotely. To help users get these functions when not running Windows, DOS 6 provided the NET command.
Finally, DOS 6 provided a powerful menu-driven file backup utility and disk compression software, allowing users to easily double the storage capacity of their hard disks.
