In 1987, the personal computer revolution became a LAN revolution: offices all across
the United States began connecting personal computers together to share information. This
revolution did not last long before user programs became so large that running within the
640MB conventional memory limit became difficult.
In some cases, users needed to use extended or expanded memory; however, many programs,
including DOS, could not run at addresses above 640KB.
In 1990, Microsoft launched the highly successful friendly user interface Windows. In
Windows, new users could learn how to use computers more quickly, while experienced users
could improve efficiency by running multiple programs at the same time.
In 1990, other utility software opened up a market worth several million dollars per
year under the name of "applications forgotten by DOS."
In 1991, Microsoft released DOS version 5.0, the result of ten years of improvements
to the earliest 86-DOS.
DOS 5 not only supported conventional, expanded, and extended memory in its address
space, it also had the ability to run DOS in the high memory area and to load device
drivers and memory-resident programs there to save memory.
DOS 5 also used a more powerful menu-driven shell to replace the corresponding command
in DOS 4. In addition, DOS 5 allowed users to quickly recall previously used commands, and
to define memory-resident macros like small fast batch files.
To provide disk utilities for all users, DOS 5 provided a command to recover
accidentally deleted files, and could rebuild disks after formatting operations.
Finally, to keep up with the growth in hard disk capacity, DOS 5 supported partitions
as large as 2GB!
