In 1988, Microsoft released DOS version 4.0. This version broke through the 32MB disk partition limit. In version 4.0,
the partition size could reach 512MB. In addition, DOS 4.O provided a menu-driven shell program,
allowing users to select files with menus, or use the mouse to select files. DOS 4.0 also introduced the MEM command; this command not
only let users display the amount of conventional memory in their computer, it could also display the amount of expanded and extended memory. In addition, version 4.0
also modified multiple commands so they could use memory more efficiently.
Early DOS 4.0 versions had some defects and received rather poor reviews. To make up for these defects, Microsoft released version 4.01.
However, most users and many manufacturers did not decide to upgrade to DOS 4.
