In 1984, IBM introduced its 80286 IBM PC AT. This model used a 1.2MB high-capacity floppy disk drive and stored the computer's setup information in the CMOS chip. To support DOS version 3.0, part of 1984 was the eve of computer networking. Although the widespread use of local area networks was still in the future, many DOS 3.0 versions were written with network support.
DOS version 3.1 successfully supported local area networks. Although the DOS 2 versions had replaced file control blocks with file handles, there were still some existing programs that used file control blocks (FCB). To reduce excessive use of file control blocks in network programs, DOS 3.1 allowed four file control blocks to be opened at a time. If a program opened a fifth file, the network server or SHARE would close the earliest opened file control block. To support the increased number of file control blocks, DOS 3.1 added the CONFIG.SYS FCBS entry. In addition, DOS 3.1 introduced the JOIN and SUBST virtual commands.
In 1986, Microsoft released version 3.2 with support for 3.5-inch Microsoft floppy disk drives. In addition, DOS 3.2 also introduced the REPLACE and XCOPY commands.
In 1987, IBM released the PS/2 series computers. To support the PS/2, Microsoft released DOS version 3.3. Besides supporting the PS/2, DOS introduced five commands: CALL APPEND KEYBCHCP NLSFUNC and FASTOPEN. DOS 3.3 was the most widely used and most popular DOS version. In fact, many users are still running DOS 3.3, because DOS 3.3 works very well. The main shortcoming of DOS 3.3 is that it only supports disk partitions no larger than 32MB.
