Based on the 86-DOS operating system, Microsoft developed MS-DOS Version 1.0. This operating system was
released in 1981 together with the earliest IBM PC.
DOS 1.0 did not support hierarchical directories. All file access had to go through file control blocks, a technology
inherited from CP/M. DOS 1.0 supported two types of executable files: COM and EXE. The format of COM files was similar to CP/M executable
files, and they were subject to the 64KB memory limit used for code, data, and stack space. In addition, Version 1.0
introduced batch files.
Because the earliest IBM PC had only 64KB of memory, memory was very tight. To reduce the total memory
required by the command processor (COMMAND.COM), Version 1.0 divided the command processor into a resident part and
a transient part. The latter could be overwritten by other DOS programs while a program was running. When the program finished running, the resident
part checked the transient part, and if necessary, the resident part reloaded it from disk into memory.
When Microsoft supplied DOS to IBM, IBM used the name PC DOS to indicate its close relationship
with the IBM PC.
