Although most users regard the earliest term “PC,” published in 1981, as equivalent to the IBM PC or PC compatibles,
in fact the term personal computer had already begun to be used in 1970. DOS is the operating sys-
tem for the IBM PC and its compatibles. Before DOS, some microcomputers used internal BASIC as their operating system,
while others used the CP/M operating system developed by Digital Research
(this company provided DR DOS).
After 1970, Microsoft developed MS-DOS. At that time, the company was developing pro-
gramming languages such as BASIC for different microcomputers.
In 1980 IBM was designing the earliest IBM PC and asked Microsoft to develop several programming languages for its new machine.
At that time CP/M was the operating system under consideration and became the operating system for IBM's new model.
During the process of designing languages for the IBM PC, although Microsoft improved the language design and application design for the IBM PC,
they realized that developing a PC operating system was the real direction of their efforts. However, because there was not enough time to start
developing an operating system from scratch. To solve this problem, Microsoft bought 86-DOS, an operating system for the 8086 processor.
This processor was very similar to the 8086 processor in the earliest IBM PC.
