The files on one of my drives were accidentally formatted away. Is there any hope of recovering them? I used quick format.

Yes.
But you need to know how to use them...
Generally, the following software can be used:
unformat This software may have some limitations, and its support for large-capacity hard disks is not very good.
kv3000 It includes recovery for things like the hard disk file allocation table, hard disk boot sector, hard disk startup sector, etc. Please read kv3000's detailed help file before operating it. It's recommended to print out a copy and follow it while working.
Sanming Disk Doctor (Sanming series tools).
diskgen(diskman)
easyrecover
L&F
You have to know how to use the above software. If you don't, ask someone around you who does know how to help. But it'd be best if it isn't the half-baked kind. Hehe...

One question: my system is 2000, drive C is in NTFS format, and the other drives are FAT32. Why is it that when I use FORMAT C: under DOS, the drive that gets formatted is D:? How can I recover the data on drive D?

You might as well try UNFORMAT 2002 in NU 2002, it's pretty good.

"Why is it that when I use FORMAT C: under DOS, the drive that gets formatted is D:?"
Because DOS doesn't recognize NTFS format, so the C drive you see under DOS is actually drive D.

In your situation, you should be able to boot into WIN2000, and then under the graphical interface of 2000, there are lots of programs that can recover data, such as: RECOVERNT; Recover 4 All Professional ; Drive Rescue-2; EasyRecovery Professional, and so on.
Remember: absolutely do not perform any operations on this partition! For example: copying, deleting, defragmenting, etc. Even when recovering the partition, it should only read this partition, not write to it.

I once had exactly the same experience as you. I found many lost files with easy recovery. Be careful not to do any write operations to drive d!!

If you don't write anything to the partition, then how can recovery be done?

Re ghttzsqgm:

The data recovery software you can generally see nowadays basically only reads the problem partition/hard disk, analyzes the data, then writes it to a normal partition or hard disk, so under normal circumstances you don't need to worry about recovery software writing to the original partition. As for recovery software, there is a lot of it. easy recovery is comparatively simple and easy to use, and there is also a version that supports the DOS platform, so you can give it a try.
