When it comes to debug, I've always had a kind of fear of it. It feels like it can do all kinds of incredible things, but at the same time seems out of reach. Some complete guides to debug usage start right off by throwing all kinds of commands at you, which scares all the newbies away. What I want to ask is, can anyone explain debug in a simple, plain way? That would help motivate newbies to learn!

I've wanted to learn it for about a year now, and I've read quite a few articles online, but unfortunately I still haven't learned it at all. I hope I can have a new start here.

I'm not very clear on the specific use of DEBUG either, and I'm not very interested in it. I suggest not learning DEBUG right at the start; it's something only very advanced experts should learn.

It's fine if a newbie doesn't learn it, because what a newbie should be learning isn't that, but the purpose and usage of DOS commands; how to write batch commands; the proper use of memory; ... after getting familiar with all that, it won't be too late to learn DEBUG.

If you insist on making newbies learn DEBUG, it'd be strange if that didn't scare them all away!

I don't think it's that hard to learn. I started out as a newbie, and I can use it fairly well now! What's hard isn't its commands, but hardware knowledge and assembly language. Especially assembly language—it's really a headache when you're first learning it.

I suggest that the senior newbie expert in post #7 open a special column so we can learn from you properly, or publish a lesson every so often.
I also hope the capable people here will give it some thought and carry forward the glory of this place.

Same here, I'm interested in debug too, it's just that I don't have any materials about it on hand.
Does any big brother here have any?

A debugger under DOS...

I know absolutely nothing about debug, but when I saw the way debug is presented, I felt a little dizzy. My god!!! How come that thing looks so much like the Windows registry? The values in it are all hexadecimal—really too much for me to take.

Doesn't seem like there are any books on debug to buy either.
