China DOS Union

On a hard disk partition formatted as FAT32, I booted into DOS with an MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk and used the “ren” command:
ren aabb DDCC (Caps Lock was already on when I typed DDCC). After going back into WIN XP, I saw that the “aabb” folder had been renamed to “ddcc” rather than an uppercase “DDCC” folder name.
What I mean is, under DOS how can I rename a folder to an uppercase folder name? It is already known that turning on Caps Lock is no use.

Use file managers like pc, vc, etc...

Sorry, I'm a DOS newbie. What are file managers like pc and vc? Where can I download them?

My real-time Chinese-localized boot disk has pc in it, and wengier's msdos71 boot disk uses vc.

Moderator, you mentioned using the vc file manager in the MS-DOS 7.1 boot disk, but that still doesn't work. What should I do? Is there really no other way?

DOS should be a case-insensitive system. It isn't like UNIX or linux, where differences in the capitalization of file (folder) names represent different files (folders).

Not exactly. The MS-DOS 7.1 boot disk already has full long filename support, and it does distinguish case (DOSLFN 0.32n is already in use).

Unless you use the long filename method, WIN9X long filename mode can distinguish case.

Under DOS there isn't much difference between upper and lower case~ By the way, why do you have to rename the folder to uppercase??

DOS has two file naming methods: one is the traditional 8.3 format, and the other is the long filename format (up to 255 characters). The former is case-insensitive, while the latter is case-sensitive, but it requires long filename driver programs such as DOSLFN.
