You misunderstood what I meant.
Under Windows, if you go directly from c:\temp1 to d:\temp2, "Back" can return to c:\temp1.

Why not try the PUSHD and POPD commands? It can be done.

The DOS window in WinNT/2K/XP already has commands like PUSHD and POPD!
If it's under pure DOS, then you need to use the PUSHD and POPD in tools like BATCHMAN to do it.

For example, under D:\DOS, enter:
PUSHD C:\WINDOWS
At this point you'll be in the C:\WINDOWS folder, just like with the CD command.
Then enter the POPD command and you can return to D:\DOS.
