If there’s too much in the file and one screen isn’t enough to show it all, then how should the type command be used (or some other command)?

Then what if it’s a DOC file?

For DOC files, you shouldn’t use type to view them.
You should use View 17.2 to view them. |

If it’s MS-DOS 7.x, then just use the MORE command directly in place of the TYPE command, for example:
MORE C:\CONFIG.SYS |
