Question: in a batch file, how can I get the creation date of a file and store that date in a variable in YYYYMMDD format?

Just use some batch enhancement tools, for example XSET, ASET, Strings, etc. can all do it very easily. These programs can be downloaded from the site's "Script Tools" section.
