My C drive is NTFS and already has WIN XP installed. My F drive is FAT32. Right now I want to install DOS on the F drive, then use the method provided in the article “How to boot pure DOS under WinNT/2K/XP” to make a dual boot. Will that work? If not, what should I do?

Is your F drive an extended partition?

The F drive is an extended partition. Someone said the C drive must be a FAT32 partition, is that true? I want to make this work without changing the C drive from NTFS. Is that possible?

It seems DOS can't be installed on an extended partition.

DOS cannot be installed on an NT partition, and early systems also had to boot from a primary partition...
So, carve out a bit of your primary partition, 200m maybe, which is already quite large for DOS...
Then use spfdisk to create it as a primary partition, and install spfdisk's boot manager... then you can install an independent DOS...

Be careful when doing this...
I don't recommend installing DOS like that.
If you really want to learn DOS, you can first install DOS in a virtual machine and learn that way. It's safe and fast.
Virtual machines: vpc or vmware. You can find them online. And there are Chinese tutorials too; Chinese-localized versions usually include them.
That way, you don't need to repartition anything, and you don't need to switch operating systems either. You can use it completely within winxp...

Yeah, I agree with the poster above.
And if you need to reboot frequently, it's very convenient too.

But the vmware trial version only lasts one month. Is there any virtual machine that isn't a trial version???

I'd really like to have a complete and systematic DOS learning e-book!
