After installing DOS 7.1, Win98 is abnormal.

A 586 machine, Win98 is installed in a logical partition, and there is no other system.

After installing DOS 7.1, starting DOS 7.1 is normal, but after typing the win command to enter 98, 98 always prompts that there is a problem accessing the registry, and restarts to repair the registry.

Restart, type win to start 98, repair the registry.

Restart, type Win to start 98, there is a prompt that there is a problem accessing the registry, and it needs to be restarted to repair.

This cycle continues until autoexec.bat and config.sys are deleted (after being backed up), and then Win98 returns to normal.

What is the reason exactly? Little brother is asking for advice from big brothers here, please give guidance. Thank you!

Then install WIN98 first and then install MSDOS7.10.

Alas, Win98 itself is DOS 7.1, there's no need to install DOS 7.1 separately...

Actually, DOS 7.1 is separated from Windows 98. If you install two, it's like you want to install two Windows 98s. If you want to install DOS 7.1 after installing Windows 98, it's best to use a multi - system management software. This is my painful experience. (Because I went back and forth between formatting and installing ----- until the CD - ROM was almost broken)

Why is it like this? Then what system should DOS 7.1 be installed with?

I deleted IO.SYS COMMAND.COM, booted with a Win98 boot disk, ran sys c:, and restored MSDOS.SYS. But if the original config.sys is present, Win98 doesn't work properly. I know there's a driver loaded in config.sys that's causing the problem, but I just can't figure out which one it is.

Supplement: I installed DOS7.1 additionally because I want to configure multi-option startup through config.sys and autoexec.bat like in DOS6, and also change the boot screen. The boot screen of 98 is in IO.SYS.

I have repeatedly tried to reproduce your situation, and now I officially confirm the cause: it's not that there's a problem with a certain driver in CONFIG.SYS, but that the code page when you installed DOS 7.1 was not selected correctly! Since you are installing the Chinese version of Win98, when installing DOS, you should also select the Simplified Chinese code page (936) accordingly, not other code pages. Otherwise, this kind of error will definitely occur when starting the Chinese version of Win98! It has been verified that as long as the selected DOS code page is the same as the code page used by Win98, this problem will not occur.

It's a problem with the path. You can modify the line with PATH=... in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command;....

qwe1234567: The problem of the landlord is indeed due to the DOS code page, not the path! I have tested and confirmed that it is absolutely correct. If the path is incorrect, it is another situation. Specifically, I have mentioned it before (it was discussed when making the super DOS boot disk a long time ago), so I won't repeat it here.
