Today I installed Windows ME, and set up a dual boot for it and MS-DOS 7.10 under the WinXP boot menu. In order to let systems such as Windows XP, Windows 2K, ROM-DOS 7.10, MS-DOS 7.10, MS-DOS 6.x, and WinME all share a single WinXP startup menu for booting, after first modifying the BOOT.INI file, I renamed WinME's IO.SYS to WINME.SYS, and changed the IO.SYS referenced in C:\WINME.DAT to WINME.SYS as well. This way both MS-DOS 7.10 and WinME could boot. But the problem is, if you only do this, they will share one C:\MSDOS.SYS, which causes incorrect configuration. What to do? There is a very good solution: just rename the MSDOS.SYS in MS-DOS 7.10 to WINBOOT.INI, and leave WinME's MSDOS.SYS where it is. Because as long as MS-DOS 7.10's IO.SYS finds a WINBOOT.INI file on C:\, it will automatically use it in place of MSDOS.SYS, while WinME's IO.SYS will not, and it will not run the CONFIG.SYS file, instead going directly into the WIN interface. At this point the problem is solved, without making any hexadecimal modifications. However, I didn't make it boot into DOS under WinME, because MS-DOS 7.10 is easier to use.

Shouldn't you use boot manager software?
