My hard drive had bad sectors the other day. Neither format nor fdisk worked. When formatting reaches the bad sector, it just stops there. Is this a logical bad sector or a physical bad sector??

Try scandisk, or use scandskw under Windows.

I used scandisk, but it had no effect......

Windows is gone. The hard drive formatting stops halfway and won't continue. When using fdisk, it shows the percentage halfway, then stops there. Sometimes it gets to 5%, stays there for a while, then starts over from 0%.......

Try DM. Use the universal IBM DM edition. Maybe it can handle it.

Please use the fbdisk program in my instant Chinese-localized boot disk, and please give me your valuable comments.

Looks like it's probably physical bad sectors. Better do a low-level format.

I've seen this situation on several machines too ~~ low-level formatting is the only option. I couldn't think of any other good way! Though I've seen others use different methods for it!

DM~
You can also use other bad sector repair software~
Format is only a formatting program, it can't repair them~

In this situation you definitely need a low-level format. Best to use DM for low-level formatting and then zero-fill it. LOWFORMAT can also be used. Then repartition and format it again, but it's best to make the disk area with bad sectors into one partition and stop using it.

Use the hard disk tool FBdisk, and it can handle it. It will automatically partition it for you into the four largest-capacity partitions without bad sectors, then do a high-level format, and it will be easily taken care of.

In this situation it's better to use low-level formatting. I've run into this problem myself. The friend in the post above recommended DM, which is pretty good.
