Experts! Please excuse me!
I'm a DOS newbie, just started learning DOS. I installed DOS7.10 in VPC, (using a Win98 boot disk plus s to format, copydos7.10) but after booting I can't use the CD-ROM. Running "mscdex" says the usage is incorrect, so I can only boot with the Win98 disk.
Please give me some guidance! Thanks

Try: MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /K
MSCD001 is the CD-ROM device name, you can change it as needed.

Sorry, but when I use it it always says it can't find the cdrom. How should I change this “mscd001”? I have three partitions, and the CD-ROM is “F”. I changed it to 002;003;004;005;006;007 and none of them worked.

When you start VPC, did you load the host CD-ROM drive?

How do I load it? In Vpc do I choose “Load Host Drive”? I can't select it, it's grayed out. Do I have to install the driver before I can select it?

Then just run it in a real environment, that's fine too, because VPC is slow for one thing, and for another its virtual environment isn't very pure, at least it has some BUGs.

Run VPC, choose 【Start System】, point to the CD-ROM icon in the lower left corner, right-click and choose load host drive x, then the CD-ROM can be loaded.
Or when the virtual system starts, hold down the del key and modify the virtual machine's bois, choose to boot from the CD-ROM. But you still have to load the host drive. (meaning the CD-ROM drive) The virtual machine's device loading is done in a virtual way. Please distinguish whether VPC can't load the CD-ROM, or whether the virtual system can't load it. In VPC, floppy boot loads by default, but CD-ROM does not.

Thanks to all the experts for the advice. My VPC can load the CD-ROM, and the virtual system can too. For example, if I want to use the CD-ROM in VPC now, one way is to change the bois to boot from the CD-ROM, another is to boot with the Win98 disk and choose to load the CD-ROM, but that feels inconvenient. I hope I can load the CD-ROM anytime whenever I need it…………
