How do you tell the difference between bad sectors (there seem to be two kinds of bad sectors)?

Logical bad sectors, physical bad sectors.
Logical bad sectors can still be repaired.
But there is no way to repair physical bad sectors.

Logical bad sectors can be repaired with the WINDOWS disk scanning program.
Physical bad sectors can be masked with PQMAGIC or some other better tool, by hiding the partition where the bad sectors are located, so the hard drive can be used normally.

Can logical bad sectors be repaired with the Windows disk scanning program? Why doesn't mine work? It only went away after a low-level format.
If the physical bad sector is not on track zero, then the method he mentioned is completely workable.

You can try this method for logical bad sectors:
1. Use Norton GHOST to back up the data on the hard drive
1. Use Norton GHOST to restore the data on the hard drive

This should get rid of the logical bad sectors

Roy's method is very unusual. :)
I wouldn't have thought of it.

Is the failure rate of floppy disks especially high? I don't even dare use floppies anymore.

Logical bad sectors are gone after repartitioning and reformatting; for physical bad sectors there is a dedicated masking tool, fbdisk, which is fairly convenient.
hd-copy seems able to repair bad floppy disks. fdc has pretty much the same function too.
