The stability of Windows 98/me is well-known, and system crashes threaten us at any time. And the long process of reinstalling Windows, especially Windows 2000, is simply unbearable. Coupled with drivers and application software, such a long process is really miserable. And the system restore of Winme is too wasteful of hard disk space and reduces the system running speed. Therefore, a system backup software that is easy to operate and powerful is essential. Here I strongly recommend Noton Ghost. Its main current versions are 5.0 and 6.0, and downloads are available everywhere. It can quickly back up the operating system and accurately restore the operating system, which is really a good backup.

Here first introduce the basic functions of Ghost: (Ghost cannot run in Windows me and Windows 2000. Users of Windows me/2000 should first make a boot disk with the mouse driver under DOS. Boot with a floppy disk, run the mouse driver, enter the folder where Ghost is located, and run Ghost.exe. It is best not to place it on drive C)

Start Ghost, and immediately enter the DOS mode. First is the Ghost version introduction. Click OK to enter the main interface, which can be divided into the following items:
Local: Backup between local hard disks
LPT: Backup between network hard disks
Option: Settings (generally not adjusted, use default values)
Quit: Quit

As a single-user, we only choose Local, which includes the following options:
Disk: Hard disk operation options
To Disk: Complete copy from hard disk to hard disk
To Image: Backup hard disk content as an image file
From Image: Restore from image file to original hard disk
Partition: Hard disk partition operation options
To Partition: Complete copy from partition to partition
To Image: Backup partition content as an image file
From Image: Restore from image file to partition
check: Check function options

Operation steps:
1. Select Local→Partition→To Image to back up the hard disk partition as an image file with the suffix ".gho".
  2. Select the drive where the partition to be backed up is located, and click OK.
  3. Select the partition to be backed up, which is the System partition, and click OK.
  4. Type the name of the image file in the Filename column, such as "Win98.gho" and the storage location (note: do not select the partition being backed up), then press the "enter" key.
  5. Select whether to compress, No: no compression, Fast: low compression, High: high compression. Generally, select High: high compression. The speed is slower, but it can compress by 50%.
  6. Now just watch the progress bar move slowly. The speed of backup is greatly related to memory. When my memory is 64M, the transfer rate is 40M per minute. And after upgrading to 128M, it is 70M per minute, saving a lot of time.
  7. After the backup is complete, you can exit Ghost.

Restore image file: (The size of the original hard disk partition must not be changed)
1. Select Local→Partition→From Image to restore the system from the image file.
2. Select the source partition to which the image file is to be restored, and click OK.
3. Prompt whether to confirm the restoration, of course YES.
After the restoration is complete, it prompts you to restart the computer. Press Enter, and it is exactly the same as before the backup.
Using Ghost to back up and restore the system takes 95% less time than reinstalling, and personal settings such as the desktop and menu do not need to be readjusted. Isn't it very convenient? If you have Ghost Explorer (Clone Ghost Manager), you can also use it to open GHO image files, just like using winzip, to extract and restore a single file from the GHO image.

Although this is relatively basic material, the building owner's enthusiasm is still worthy of praise, and it is encouraged to be highlighted.

Excuse me, all you experts, how to enter Ghost using a DOS boot disk? My Ghost is installed on drive F. F:>\softwar\ghost>ghost/, but it just can't be opened. I wonder if any expert can give me some advice. Thanks.

Ghost has transformed to run in a Windows environment starting from version 9.0. Although it has powerful functions for backing up and restoring the partition where the operating system in use is located, there are also many drawbacks. For example, if the system is seriously damaged and cannot boot into Windows, then Ghost has no use. Moreover, considering factors such as protection for software activation, the system hot - backed up by Ghost under Windows may not be a 100% image. So, I still prefer to use the DOS version of Ghost.

Actually, the original poster has already made it very clear. It is necessary to boot with the system disk and then enter the folder where ghost.exe is located.

What LZ said makes a lot of sense. Especially when repairing computers for girls in school, this is a very good choice.
