The IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM files in MS-DOS 7.x are especially large, more than 300K total. Can anyone compress them? I’ve tried UPX, PKLITE, APACK, DIET, and COMPREXE, but none of them worked.

To compress programs in DOS 7.x/8.x, you can use COMPREXE -h
But COMMAND.COM cannot be compressed

I know, that person on the UPX forum already said so. But COMMAND.COM, IO.SYS, and FORMAT.COM and the like still won’t work.

I tried it. IO.SYS can be compressed with Comprexe -h, Command.com can be compressed but can’t be used, and for Format.com you should still use the one compressed by the author of APACK.

Which version of APACK was used to compress FORMAT.COM? I tried versions 0.91, 0.98, and 0.99, but none of them worked. Also, although IO.SYS can be compressed by COMPREXE, the compression ratio is too small, basically the same as not being compressed at all.

This FORMAT.COM was compressed by the author of APACK himself

Strange, did the author of APACK never release this version of APACK that can compress FORMAT?

Roy, do you have compressed versions of MODE.COM, SYS.COM, and CHKDSK.EXE and the like?

Also, I found that besides COMPREXE, EPACK 1.6 can also successfully compress files like EDIT.COM (although the compression ratio is not as high as COMPREXE), and it can also successfully compress files like FORMAT and MORE. Although the COMMAND.COM file compressed with it can run(!), it uses more than 70K more conventional memory.

I don’t have MODE.COM, but I do have SYS.COM and CHKDSK.EXE

That CHKDSK is the same size as the original one.

Compress command.com?
It is itself a command interpreter. If you compress it, who is going to interpret how to decompress it?
Seems impossible.

Why compress these programs? If it’s to fit more stuff onto a boot disk, that’s understandable, but what’s the point of compressing them for normal use? I don’t get it. Could it make them run a bit faster? I think it would only use more memory, right?
