How can I get the sound card to produce sound in DOS? What software should I use, and how should CONFIG and AUTOEXEC be set?

The most important thing for using a sound card under DOS is to set the BLASTER environment variable to the correct value, for example SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H6 P330 T6, where A indicates the hardware address, I indicates the interrupt number, D indicates low DMA, H indicates high DMA, P indicates the MPU401 address, and T indicates the sound card type. A is usually 220, I is mainly one of two possibilities, 5 or 7, P is often 330, and T corresponds to your sound card type (T1 means SB 1.0, T2 means SB 1.5, T3 means SB 2.0, T4 means lower-version SB Pro and its compatibles, such as ESS688, T5 means higher-version SB Pro, and T6 means SB 16 and its compatibles, such as SB AWE and SB PCI). For ISA sound cards, you can usually just use the automatically set values; for example, the default value for an ESS688 sound card is A220 I5 D1 T4, and you can also use its included setup program such as ESSCFG to reset it. For PCI sound cards, some can use SB-Link technology, while most of the others can use their included drivers to virtualize an ISA sound card for use, such as SB PCI, SB Audigy, C-Media 8738, SiS 7018 and other PCI sound cards; their drivers can be downloaded in “Drivers”. Sound cards such as SB Live!, Yamaha, and Aopen can also use their included drivers so they can be used in pure DOS, or in a DOS window under Windows. If you want to set the configuration parameters for a PCI sound card, you can use its included setup program, for example the SB Live! sound card driver includes the SBECFG command, or edit its configuration file, such as the SBPCI.INI file in the SB PCI driver.
