yanone: To not load COMMAND.COM into the UMB, you should not use the LoadTop command in MSDOS.SYS (this command doesn't serve that purpose, the article you saw online is obviously incorrect), but rather use the /LOW option that COMMAND itself provides. For example, in CONFIG.SYS, use:
