The following is a quote from Wengier on June 16, 2003 at 23:25:06:
Let me summarize the top 10 advantages of using DOS:

1: DOS is very easy to obtain (available for download everywhere on the Internet);
2: DOS is compact, flexible, and fast;
3: DOS has very low requirements, and has good upward/downward compatibility;
4: DOS has a large number of existing software/resources of various types;
5: DOS is powerful, with functions in various aspects, including multimedia, etc.;
6: DOS (especially FreeDOS) represents GNU/freedom, openness, and development;
7: Learning DOS is very helpful for familiarizing with system operations;
8: DOS is closer to the bottom layer, so it is more suitable for users like DD, Hongse Kuangxiang, etc. to use DOS;
9: DOS can do things that other systems are not easy to do, including repairing machines as mentioned by wglwx;
10: Many people have nostalgic emotions, such as Fang Shao, etc., so DOS is more suitable for them to use.

That is to say, DOS has these 10 advantages at the same time, and is also suitable for many different types of users, which other systems do not have, right?? So, we should use DOS.

I very much agree with the moderator's summary of DOS!

I am someone who often reinstalls the operating system. But I've heard that Ghost needs to be carried out under DOS. May I ask you big brothers how to operate it?

Please point out which basic books to read first and how to get started?

I am a beginner in computers with very little knowledge of system. Especially when my computer has a problem and I need to restore it with software, I am even more helpless. Now I want to ask brothers and sisters to help me.

This post, the LZ's words are certainly well - summarized, but I really admire
Personally, DOS is not actually miraculous or mysterious. It's just that, as a thing, after going through a glorious era, it can still meet some specific needs in the current and a long time to come by relying on its unique features. Thus, it exists.
When comparing DOS with Windows, it's ultimately meaningless. Because in this world, any comparison is one - sided. The seemingly powerful Windows actually has to rely on complete and powerful hardware support to be so powerful. An air conditioner is good, but in an area with insufficient power supply, it's not as good as a palm - fan. Maybe many people will think this is specious. But in fact, everyone does exist relying on their own features. The weakness in one one - sided comparison may become an advantage in another one - sided comparison. For example, a radio and a TV. Both are information media. The TV can provide both image and sound, while the radio can only provide sound. But why has the radio not been replaced by the TV or any other media so far? Besides reasons like low cost, cheap price, small size, etc., there is also a disadvantage that is actually an advantage. Didn't I just say that it can only provide sound? That is indeed a disadvantage. But a driver can listen to the radio while driving, but can't watch TV while driving! In this specific situation, the disadvantage becomes an advantage. It's really a bit funny to think about.
So, I hope that everyone's research on DOS can be more practical. Under the current circumstances, what can the small DOS still do for us? In what situations can its disadvantages be turned into advantages? If it's purely for technology for technology's sake and we have to compete with Windows, it's just like competing with Windows in desktop applications with Linux. Except for our own entertainment, there's not much practical significance.
Wish everyone can have endless gains in the process of researching and learning DOS!

I'm also a novice who is completely helpless when the system has problems. I see others enter DOS, and then their fingers fly on the keyboard for a while, OK! Everything is normal! It's really impressive how magical DOS is. Today, I'm fortunate to see the wonderful remarks from all the experts, which has strengthened my determination to learn DOS. Long live DOS!!!

I want to know, can you tell me about those initially hard-to-understand English words in CMOS?

Is there really so many functions? I came to take a look because I saw an introduction to this website in Computer Weekly. I didn't expect DOS to have so many uses. Then I really learned something. It seems I need to study seriously. Please don't mind, and please give me more guidance!
