I heard that Microsoft is about to launch a 64-bit file operating system. Then, is Freedos still useful? Also, can Freedos operate on NTFS?

Some friends upstairs say that DOS is outdated, but that's not right. In the very popular embedded system development now, DOS is the most used real-time control system. In addition, there are embedded Linux, WinCE, uC/OS, VxWorks (certified by the US military), etc. The 16-bit DOS operating system has limited word length in control system development, and the speed * precision cannot be brought to the limit. Therefore, the development of 32-bit DOS is imperative.

The following is the speech of dgqb on 2004-2-26 10:36:49:
Learning DOS is completely meaningless. LINUX can't even catch up with WINDOWS. The powerful WINDOWS, who will be its gravedigger? Only after learning and using it do I feel it's meaningless. I've played from 386 machines to now, and LINUX 6.0 could still compete with WINDOWS 95. In the broadband era, unless you don't want to watch movies or play online games, just be a hacker...

When it comes to being powerful, who can match commercial Unix. ... Except for astronomical prices, there are almost no shortcomings.
Even Apple's Mac system is only stronger than Windows. You should know that there is a large BSD component in the core, which also fully shows that complicated and cumbersome BSD - like systems can still be made accessible.
The above two are indeed not very popular in China, but in foreign countries, the market share is not worse than Windows. Especially in the professional market, Microsoft can only make a fuss about cost - performance, constantly emphasizing, "My stuff is not as BT as Unix, but it's cheap, everyone come and have a try..."
Linux, needless to say, tens of thousands of manufacturers spare no effort to develop, most of the industrial - strength software support, numerous application software. The key is that you can see the source code, and the future is bright. (Now making 64 - bit graphics workstations, except for SGI's own IRIX, it's only Linux that is the most powerful. Windows 64?? Don't be kidding. The performance and stability are much worse, and the professional drivers are also incomplete)
DOS, I have a very deep impression. You should know that in 1998, only under DOS could you play H games from the Japanese...
On the PC platform, DOS is indeed outdated, but I think everyone who studies the principles of operating systems should start from here first. As for real - mode embedded systems, I don't know. It is estimated that the prospects should be quite good.

The following is the statement from Lydong on November 19, 2002 at 9:42:48:
Wengier:
You said: "(freedos) supports extremely large memory (up to 4G at most), etc." Does it mean that FREEDOS can directly manage extended memory within 4G? What is the difference between it and MS-DOS? When I directly run COMMAND.COM of FREEDOS in WIN98, it occupies 74K conventional memory. I don't know what's going on?

Are all the DOS downloads provided on the current site royalty-free? "They are all free (free--libertarian), not gratis (given away for free)." Then where should one purchase them?

Note: You MAY need to create a separate Master HDD Image for
1. EACH HDD configuration
A. PATAVersus
B. SATA2. And for EACH HDD size

Note: RAID – Imaging process with RAID not yet supported with FreeDOS
Under investigation

Creating the FreeDOS Master HDD:

Part I:
Creating the Fat32 Partition using FreeDOS beta 9

Turn on the PC and insert the FreeDOS Beta 9.0 CD into the CD drive.
Turn off the PC.
Turn on the PC. The computer boots from the FreeDOS CD.

At the FreeDOS splash screen, (Warning: HD boots in 15 seconds!)
Enter: 1 and press <Enter>

Select 2) Boot without XMS attempt cdrom loading
Enter: 2

Select 1) Configure FreeDOS installation settings
Enter: 1

This next screen will only come up if the HDD already has partitions
Select 1) Start installation of FreeDOS beta9
Enter: 1

Press any key at “THE FREEDOS BETA 9 DISTRIBUTION” page.

Press <Esc> to exit out of the FreeDOS DETAILED INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS page

Select 1) Partition harddisk using fdisk
Enter: 1

You should be familiar with the next screens – Same as MS-DOS

Do you want to use large disk [Fat32] support {Y/N} [Y]
Press <Enter> for Yes

For Unpartitioned HDDs, skip down to “Create a Primary Fat32 FreeDOS Partition”

For HDD previously partitioned for other OS’s, first

View the Partition information
At the “Choose one of the following:” prompt
Select 4. Display partition information
Enter: 4 and press <Enter>
Note all partitions (if any) that are present (Primary, Extended, Logical, Non-DOS/NTFS), because you will need to delete them all.
When done, press <Esc>

Delete all partitions

Select 3. Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
Enter: 3 and press <Enter>
Delete any Primary, Extended, Logical, Non-DOS/NTFS partitions

Mounting the second CD-ROM drive:

At the prompt enter:
root@cdimage /root % mkdir /mnt/mydir
root@cdimage /root % mount –t iso9660 /dev/hdd /mnt/mydir
root@cdimage /root % cd /mnt/mydir
root@cdimage /root % partimage

Partition Imaging Utility: PartImage 0.6.4
Identifying the correct Partition information before continuing:
If the “Partition to save/restore” section reports
“ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 -unknown- [HDD size] ” this is correct.
Verify the HDD size is also correct.

However, if your drive has either
1. No partition defined
2. More than 1 partition defined

Repeat Part I: Creating the Fat32 Partition using FreeDOS beta 9

There must be ONLY 1 Fat32 Partition defined.
Having more than 1 partition defined or no partition defined will lead to improper results.
E.g. You will either be
A. Booted back out of the partimage program (No partition defined)
B. Or the system will not be able to boot from the HDD image when imaging is complete. (Occurs when installing the FreeDOS image to a non-active partition)

Using the Partition Imaging Utility:

Press <Tab>
In the “Image file to create/use” box
Enter: myimage.000
Press <Tab>
Press the down arrow期间 to select “Restore partition from an image file” and
Press the <Spacebar> to select this option.
Press <F5> to Continue
At the “freedos [OK]”,
Press [OK]
Press <F5> to Continue
FAT information page
Press [OK]
Confirmation page
Press [YES]
It should take 5-6 seconds to image an IDE HDD
It should take 15-16 seconds to image a SATA HDD
At Click [OK], press [OK]
You should be booted out of the partimage program at this point
At the prompt, enter: halt –n
The systems should shut down automatically
For Grantsdale systems only: the system will not shut down automatically.
Turn off the system, when this last line appears
“Remounting remaining filesystems read only…”

Booting your FreeDOS Master HDD
Turn on the PC
Eject both CD-ROM drives and remove the media
Verify the system boots completely to the FreeDOS kernel version 1.1.32…
The last line should read:

“Select from Menu [012345678], or press [ENTER] – Singlestepping (F8) is: OFF

Turn off the system
Turn on the system
Verify the system boots completely to the FreeDOS kernel version 1.1.32…
Turn off the system

This will be the MASTER IMAGE that the factory should clone.

Label the MASTER IMAGE with the name of the motherboard it was created on.

Create submasters and test the image before replicating the MASTER IMAGE.

REPEAT THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT FOR THE NEXT SKU/MOTHERBOARD configuration.
