The speed isn't as slow as you say. It can connect to the network too. Mine is even a portable edition / this virtual machine of mine. It seems it can't use GHOST to install the system. Loading ISO image files is invalid. Other than that it's all pretty good.

When VM creates a virtual machine there is a type option, make sure you choose ms-dos under other!!!

VPC seems not to support booting images larger than 4GB, but VMWARE can So VPC won't do for making boot CDs
