I've done something similar before. I used a small DOS-compatible chip as the core board, and the other basic functions were all there. I wrote programs with FREEBASIC, used MSDOS as the system, and communicated with a GSM module through the serial port. I had planned to use uC\OS under MSDOS for task scheduling, but I didn't know how to do task scheduling between FREEBASIC and uC\OS, so I had to stop. At that time I only achieved single-tasking under DOS and GSM communication. It could make phone calls and send Chinese text messages.
