The Earth - shaped logo on the right is an energy - related logo that most motherboards have. This logo also appears elsewhere, such as on monitors, and the power options in the "Screen Saver" tab of the Windows Display Properties.

If that's the case, then I hear a "beep" every time I start up. Does that mean there's a fault with the AMI BIOS?

Hey, I don't know why my brother would think that way. Discharging just means taking the battery out and resetting the CMOS once again. I've never heard of anyone damaging the BIOS by discharging; besides, generally, motherboards have jumpers to clear CMOS settings, and you just need to short the jumper cap for 5 seconds. The method of you pulling and inserting the BIOS chip is not only cumbersome to operate, but also some are actually soldered on the board, and what's more, the possibility of damaging the BIOS chip increases greatly.

Use the jumper next to the CMOS. Just short it by connecting pins 2 and 3. But you need to do it without shutting down the computer. I tried removing the battery, but generally it doesn't work!
