What I mean is, after installing 98 and XP, the computer always defaults to XP first and 98 second, but I want 98 to have priority at startup.

Also, after installing XP, because the hard drive got infected and XP can no longer boot, how can I remove the XP option from the boot menu? In other words, how do I uninstall XP — do I have to use the installation CD???

No need, just edit the boot.ini file on drive C directly.

Can both problems be solved this way? How exactly do I do it? I'm really too much of a newbie

Of course. Take a look at the boot.ini file, make a backup first, then try editing it yourself..

Okay, I'll give it a try.
Also, isn't there an even simpler way?

This is the simplest way...
There are more complicated ones...
Remember to use Notepad to open that file and edit it...

Hehe, I finally found it and opened it. I hadn't changed the file attributes, no wonder I couldn't find it. I'm too much of a newbie, really.
So which items should I change next???

timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

No, this one, under the root directory of drive C. Turn on “show all files” in Folder Options.
The filename is ‘BOOT.INI’.

Change it to this and 98 will boot first.
If you don't want XP, just delete the part in red.

You can also change it very conveniently from within the Windows system.
Right-click “My Computer,” choose “Properties,” then choose “Advanced,” click “Startup and Recovery” under “Advanced” (startup and recover", and in the “Default operating system” drop-down under “System startup,” just choose the system you want as the default boot.
